4 Engine Lazair Ultralight Aircraft
Lazair Ultralight Aircraft
Ultralight Aircraft Magazine - The Lazair ultralight was designed by Dale Kramer in the early 1980s. In 1000 of them were produced from his Ontario factory. The 1st Lazair aircraft were powered by 2 highly modified Pioneer chainsaw engines, of approximately 5 hp each. These spun two multi-blade propellers on each engine.
The second-generation of the Lazair was powered by the Rotax single cylinder 9.5 hp 2 stroke engines. While both the Pioneer and Rotax proved quite capable of flying a land plane version, many pilots decided to equip their aircraft with floats, and in some cases amphibious floats.
Power these aircraft pilots installed 2 more engines on the outer edge of the D cell. Some used for Rotax engines, while others used to Rotax and to pioneer chainsaw engines.

In this video taken by “Old Chuckie” in 1984 at EAA’s Sun N Fun convention held in Lakeland Florida the factory demonstrated a 4 engine Lazair on floats. The float operation was being done from a modified drainage ditch which had been filled with water.
It was approximately 300 feet long and about 30 feet wide. I know this because I was landing and taking off a Buccaneer Amphibian XA from the canal, and my wings would overlap the sides of the canal and my sponsors were at the edge of the water.
“Old Chuckie” was filming that day while I was flying. He has a number of videos on antique and vintage ultralight aircraft on YouTube, just do a search for “Old Chuckie” - he has now moved on from aviation into motorcycles and has some very unique videos both online and for private viewing.
